Mercedes ML550 vs. The Cadillac SRX
Inside, the base model of the ML550 is equipped with vinyl upholstery, wood trim, a striking two-tone color scheme, and a handy new multimedia interface allows for no-hands Bluetooth calling and connection for most mobile music-players. Additionally, there is charcoal activated pollen and dust filter, a minor inclusion that could save much discomfort for those who suffer from allergies come spring time. There are also 12-volt power outlets for laptop chargers or other electronics and the rear window is electrically heated to make winter mornings a bit easier to navigate.
Parked aside the Mercedes ML550, the Cadillac SRX provides an immediate and striking contrast of design, with a sensibility that is much more aggressive. The 2010 and 2011 Cadillac SRX (essentially the same vehicle) do not offer a third row of seating as did the 2009, and like the ML550, seats 5 adults comfortably. The SRX’s engine is an admittedly underwhelming 260 horsepower, 3.0 Liter V6, but can be upgraded to a turbo-charged V6 for a significant chunk of money. All-wheel drive is an option for the 2011, but all models feature an interesting and much-hyped traction control system that allows torque to be transferred not only to the front and rear axle, based on the situation, when inclement weather poses problems. However, the interior is where the SRX makes its strongest sales pitch.
Inside the SRX, the seats are arguably the most comfortable in its class, and the upholstery, trim and design materials are all the highest quality. The slick navigation system rises from the dashboard, and fits in usefully and aesthetically pleasing with the overall design. Unlike the Ml550, Bluetooth connectivity, heated seats and even power passenger seats all require and upgrade package, however, and the overall cargo capacity measures in at 61.1 cubic feet.
When deciding between the two models, common considerations as well as more idiosyncratic preferences will weigh heavily. Gas mileage, always a popular motivator, is better for the SRX by about 5 miles to the gallon. In town, the ML550 will get a wallet-busting 13 miles to the gallon to the SRX 18, neither being a real blessing upon the environment. For families weighing travel plans, the 13 more cubic feet of cargo capacity weighs in the ML550′s favor, but a lower price point for the SRX may counteract size considerations. Also, if hauling or towing in any capacity is part of the job description for the prospective vehicle, the considerable power advantage of the ML550 over the SRX needs be weighed.
Overall, the Mercedes Benz ML550 and the Cadillac SRX both offer luxury in design and material. The performance differences and price points will likely be the two points that cause buyers divided between the two models to oscillate, and ultimately, as always, one will be forced to decide which features one prioritizes in their vehicle, with an eye on what tasks the vehicle will be most used for. Truly, there is enough respective strength in each model to warrant a wise purchase, if the high price point is manageable.
